The conservative Christian Right is at it again and their dreams for the days of the Confederacy are always just a pleasant nap away. This time it’s through a new product called ‘Obama Waffles.’ The creators are Bob DeMoss and Mark Whitlock and their use of imagery all over the box perpetuates a number of racist fears that are bred daily into the psyche of white folks.
On the front you’ll see an image reminiscent of Aunt Jemima, which helps to conjure up images of slavery. On the top of the box is a caricature of Obama with headdress, reinforcing the propaganda that he is Muslim (and therefore a terrorist). On the back it has Obama in stereotypical Mexican dress wearing a sombrero with a recipe for “Open Border Fiesta Waffles.” That can serve “four or more illegal aliens.” The recipe goes on to say, ”while waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?”
The AP caught up with good ole boys Bob and Mark at the Values Voter Summit in Washington DC co-sponsored by “socially conservative” (read: anti-gay, misogynistic, racist) groups such as Family Research Council, Focus on the Family Action, and American Values. The AP reports:
“Asked if he considered the pictures of Obama on the box to be racial stereotypes, Whitlock said: ”We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman’s Own or Emeril’s — there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market. So we’ve taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes.”
Hmmm. Not so sure those examples really support their use of racist images. Newman and Emeril had their own products they endorsed, created, etc. This, and I’m going out on a limb here, was not endorsed or created by Obama or his campaign. But don’t quote me; it’s just a hunch.
The creators of Obama Waffles don’t see anything wrong with this, as evidenced in a interview with them.
In fact, they see it as nothing more than “having a little fun during the election season.” But actually, there’s nothing fun or light about the perpetuation of white supremacy. And as white anti-racists, as human beings, we can’t sit this out anymore.
ACTION ALERT: Tell Bob and Mark that their product is racist and unacceptable. You can contact them here.
UPDATE: According to some in the blogosphere, one of the “Waffles” creators works for Fox.
